Softball Wins 4th Straight City Title; Freshman Crew Claim Gold

NCS won its fourth consecutive D.C. softball championship Saturday, while a crew of freshmen rowers claimed the championship trophy at the world's oldest and largest high school regatta.

In softball, Anika Jones '19 scored both runs, including the game-winner in the 7th inning, for a 2-1 victory Saturday over Georgetown Visitation in the D.C. State Athletic Association title game.

Jones was named tournament MVP after going 2-for-3, including her leadoff triple. She scrambled home, to the euphoria of her teammates, when a one-out grounder from Emily Kim '20 was bobbled. Kim also drove Jones home in the 5th inning with a single to tie the game at 1.

Jones and winning pitcher Jamie Wang '19 have been on all four of the championship teams. Wang struck out 13 hitters in seven innings Saturday as she scattered four hits, completing a tournament in which she recorded one no-hitter and 36 strikeouts in 19 innings.

In rowing, the freshman crew — Olivia McManus '22, Ellie Knight '22, Rachel Wohlstadter '22, Lila Osborne '22, Emma Fullerton '22, Zoe Bucshon '22, Alexa Van Voorhis '22, Kristine Schwartz '22, and coxswain Maya Aguirre '22 — were dominant at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.

The freshman team posted the fastest times in all three of its races, Friday's heat and Saturday's semifinal and final. In the last race, NCS beat Merion Mercy by half a boat length to capture the T.C. Williams Freshman Coach Award.

Three other NCS crews also raced on the Schuykill River: The senior eight took fifth place; the second eight reached the semifinals, where they record the 6th-fastest time; and the senior four placed 25th in Friday's heats.

Congratulations to these athletes for their fantastic accomplishments!
