Edward J. Shapiro to Deliver 2019 Commencement Address

Edward J. Shapiro, a partner at the law firm Latham and Watkins and a member of the NCS Governing Board, will deliver the address at National Cathedral School's 119th Commencement ceremony on June 8.

Shapiro, the father of Dorothy '19, joined the NCS Governing Board in 2017 and sits on the Governance, Head of School Transition, and Audit committees. As chair of the Audit Committee, he also sits on the PECF Audit Committee. He and his wife, Nell, have been devoted friends to NCS for many years, including as members of the Library Council and chairing the Parents Association's Spring Benefit Committee.

"I'm delighted that NCS has the opportunity to honor Ed in this way and to recognize him for his expertise and volunteerism," said NCS Head of School Kathleen O'Neill Jamieson. "He expresses exceptional commitment to our mission and has worked on behalf of our students with notable compassion, generosity, and wisdom."

In his practice at Latham and Watkins, which he joined in 1981, Shapiro is an experienced trial lawyer and specializes in commercial litigation, investigations into allegations of business misconduct, and regulation of foreign investment in the United States.

From 1986 to 1988, Shapiro was assistant general counsel of the Department of Defense, where he helped manage the department's response to, among other matters, the Iran-Contra investigation.

Shapiro holds a BA from Princeton University and a JD from Harvard Law School.

He and Nell have also been active volunteers at St. Albans School. In addition to their daughter, Dorothy, they have two sons, Jack STA '16 and Griffin STA '18.

The Commencement ceremony will begin at 5:00 pm in the Washington National Cathedral.
