Barta '22 Wins Two Golds at International Track Meet

Sydney Barta '22 won a pair of gold medals at the World Para Athletics Junior Championships this month in Nottwil, Switzerland.

Barta triumphed in the under-17 100 meters, with a time of 14.05 seconds, and 200 meters, which she ran in 28.23 seconds. Her medals were among 16 golds earned by Team USA athletes in the four-day meet, which drew more than 300 athletes ages 14 to 19 from 44 countries.

This is the second time in as many years when Barta swept the sprints at a major international meet. Last July, just before beginning at NCS as a 9th grader, she won the 100, the 200, and the long jump at the 2018 IWAS Youth World Games in Athlone, Ireland. For that performance, U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, named Barta a Track & Field High School All-American.

At Nottwil, Barta also competed in the 4x100-meter relay as well as the shot put, long jump, and discus.

Later this month, Barta will represent the United States at the Parapan American Games in Lima, Peru, which start Aug. 23. There, she will compete in the 200 meters and the discus.

Congratulations to Sydney, and best of luck in Lima!
