5 NCS Seniors Named National Merit Semifinalists

Five NCS seniors are among the 16,000 students nationwide named Wednesday as semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, establishing them among the top 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors who took last fall's PSAT.

Avery Borgmann '20, Sophia Charles '20, Amelia Griffin '20, Audrey May '20, and Iris Wu '20 were selected on the basis of their scores last October on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT is taken by about 1.6 million high school juniors each year.

Fourteen other NCS students were named National Merit Commended Students with scores that ranked in the top 3 percent nationally. They are:
  • Katie Ambrose '20
  • Lydia Danas '20
  • Sam Douki '20
  • Zandi Eberstadt '20
  • Alyssa Gabidoulline '20
  • Schuyler Holleman '20
  • Emily Kim '20
  • Bea Markham '20
  • Sophia McNicholas '20
  • Anika Mitra '20
  • Priya Phillips '20
  • Pippa Self '20
  • Avery Watkins '20
  • Rachel Yoon '20

The five semifinalists are now eligible to apply for consideration as a National Merit Finalist, a determination based on test scores, academic records, recommendations, and essays. Last year, all four NCS semifinalists were chosen as finalists. The National Merit Scholarship Corp. will announce the finalists in February.

Congratulations, seniors!
